05:02 pm - Meh.. Its been forever since I actually posted something again. I've really only been usung this to keep up with others on LJ and tend to be on FB more - here: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=763057515&ref=profile
Looking back since when I last posted I finally got off my arse and been using my staff travel more, heading off to both Europe and the USA. Over the last 10 months I've been to 9 countries and spent a total of 106 hours flying and I'd forgotten how much fun it is and have resolved to do it more often. The limiting factor has become time, though, since its really burnt through my leave. I was supposed to be going to San Diego to help run the Tournament of the Pheonix and then a side trip to Las Vegas but I just can't get the time off. Too many other things on the books over the next 6 months eating up my leave - a wedding & the Taupo Joust in january and a trip to Gold Coast in Feb. I also need to save some leave up because I'm hoping to head to Peru & Machu Picchu next year.
And I'm trying to squeeze in more time to work on my photography since its something I love doing. Specifically HDR, so I need to improve my technique.
Anyway, will attempt again to update more often. :)

12:59 am - Its been forever since I updated this thing. As some of you may or may not know my house was burgled about 2 weeks ago. It took the cops 3 days to show up and they got no usable crime scene info so yesterday I got a lovely letter saying my case has been archived due to no leads. Bah.. Also after much wrangling with the insurance company we've finally come to an equitable settlement so I can start replacing things, like my beloved laptop. It still won't replace all the stuff I had on my laptop though, like a huge amount of my digital photography and pictures that are gone for good now because I was supid enough never to have backed it up. Oh well. Since the burglary my cars broken down and cost mucho $$ to fix, and I got a flat tire so its been a crappy 2 weeks. On the bright side 2 friends of mine are back from Sweden and staying with me for a while beofre heading back to Sweden to live. Feels much better having them in the house, just a pity they weren't in country 4 days earlier as the burglar(s) wouldn't have struck then. Anyway, I'll try to update more often.

04:33 pm - Greetings from Karrinyup Thats Karrinyup, Perth. Ok,I've been here six days and I'm dying to leave. Its not Perth itself, i could happily spend another week or two here. Its being stuck in close proximity with the family. Me, my mum and brother have come over to visit the grandparents and the cousins and we're staying at my grandparentsplace. I love my family but i can only take so much time around them before being driven insane and i've reached that limit. The grandparents keeping 'elderly hours' isn't helping either (thats bed at 8pm up at 5am). Stupidly on my part i left my drivers licence at home in Auckland so I can't take the car out for a drive either, besides we're supposed to be doing 'family time' which seems to consist of wandering aroud malls..... not my thing at all. I'd love to go to the WA Meseum, the WA Medical Museum, and visit some of the old buildings around the place - like the Fremantle Gaol. *sigh* but no one else does, so malls it is.... Supposed to be having a bit of a booze up with the cousins tonight which will be a welcome relief. I must say though that the only upside to browsing the malls is being exposed to the plethora of gorgeous women here - they're everywhere! :)
Anyway, i'm on a crappy coin operate public acess internet with the 'you can't possible break it' keyboard. Not very indusive to easy typing. So Thats all from here. Can't wait to get home in a couple of days and have some time to myself. Current Mood: discontent

05:49 pm - Who Killed the Electric Car Bah.... still waiting for my laptop to arrive. They said two weeks and that was 3 weeks ago. Now they're saying another 2 weeks yet. Bloody Dell, I thought they were better than this.
Heading off to Perth this Thursday for a week and was really wanting to take the laptop with me.
Bugger.
In other news.... If you haven't seen the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car? you have to. I always knew Amercia was incredibly corrupt, but this movie reinforces that. It shows how a brilliant and workable concept for an environmentally friendly electric car is totally trashed by State & Federal government and big business. Totally tragic. Current Mood: aggravated

07:43 pm - The Dreaded Lurgy As usual I've been slack updating. At the moment I'm suffering from the dread winter lurgy and have been for about teh alst two weeks. I've been rather staunch about it and just sucked it up and battled through until Saturday when I finally submitted and took the last few days off sick. Should've done it sooner as I feel a whole lot bettr now. Other happenings - Well last month some mates of mine, Bren & Gray, moved into my place as they've sold their palce and are heading overseas for quite a while in another two months. Its been great having them here as I don't have to cook as much and I've been able to rope them into helping out with some building around the house. Some of you may or may not be aware that I'm a Union Deleagte at work and the time to renogotiate our comtract has rolled around again - Has it really been 3 years since the last one? Its seems management are gearing up for a fight this time as they want to cut pay rates and penal rates across the board. Its not something I'm going to stand for - especially since they're posting massive profits and their share price has gone through the roof over the last 2 years. I'm just organising the membership at work now to mobilise and running a bit of a recruitment drive. Unfortunatly the other union at work are a pack of pussies that bow and scrap to management and generally don't behave like a union should. So much for unionist solidarity. And the Labour party are rapidly losing my support as they turn National blue with Cullens comments that we should stop asking for pay-rises and the fact this company, that the government is the major shareholder of, continually undermines the unions and breaches the Employment Relations Act yet this Labour government stands by and does nothing. Grrr. Current Location: Home Current Mood: crappy Current Music: Blissful Silence

10:46 pm - Tempus Fugit Its been bloody ages since I've updated and for good reason. Apart from the fact that since New Years I've spent every minute occupied and not much time to do anything else, my computer committed suicide and has resisted all my attempts to revive it, including transfusions and transplants. I'm still PC'less but not for much longer. First thing I have to do is download and then upload all the pictures stuffed into my little camera - about 1 GB worth of pictures from Nich & Kirstens wedding, Mordavia LARP, Pirates LARP, the Great Lake Tourney, and the Matakana Joust. Usually I just put things onto my Deviant Art account but I think given the varied and 'snapshot" nature of a lot of them I need to have a hunt for a good hosting site - anyone have any suggestions for a good one thats easy to use and navigate?
The Christchurch and Wellington Armageddons have been quietly sneaking up on me and now I have to work out which one to go to as I can't get away with going to both. Again - any suggestions? Anybody else going to either?
Next week with any luck I'll be starting training with a new sword group which is setting up as part of the foot combat arm of Company of the Lance (The Jousters). This means that we'll get to do some cross-over training to be able to do integrated horse vs foot combat. :) Current Location: Work

11:13 pm - Diclofenac is my friend We have a love/hate relationship that's very on again, off again. I have a problem with my spine from a car accident about 10 years ago that flares up every so often but also leave me more susceptible to injuries of my back and neck and that's what I managed to do last week. Every day I walk up a few steps to my house but last Wednesday the task was completely beyond me and I tripped and fell badly. I lay there for a while hoping the agony in my neck would subside, but it didn't. After managing to sum up the courage to grit my teeth and bare it I managed to crawl inside and and organise to get myself to my GP. So, the upshot is I'm going back into physio again. Plus my old pal Diclofenac is keeping me company, along with his mates Orphenadrine and Digesic. I've kinda gotten used to taking medication all the time, but the annoying thing is the neck brace I've been wearing. At least in a few days I can take it off for part of the day so I don't look like a total dork.
My fear is that the old injury will get worse like it was about 3 years ago which left me with a consistent low level of pain and would actually worsen while I slept waking me after about 3-4hrs. That bout took 18 months of physio and medication to get over and it seemed I'd turned a corner and managed to escape any further problems. So fingers crossed that this doesn't aggravate the old problem further. :) Current Location: Home Current Mood: sore

02:44 am Ahhh, nearing the end of a long run of shifts and overtime. 2 whole days off, what bliss. Off course I'm going to be spending them slogging my guts out digging holes and mixing concrete so they won't be terribly relaxing, but as they say - change is as good as a break.
In other news, I'm now the proud owner of a medieval seige weapon, so if you're planning on storming a castle or want to really ruin some infantry's day give me a bell. :) Just have to organise getting it moved from Tauranga up to Auckland and start the rebuilding project. 01:12 am Its been a while since I posted anything, but yes, I'm still alive. :) Work has been a bit frenetic lately. Overtime has come back with a vengence and I've been busy snapping it up. Which is good as its allowed me to pay of a few bills and start on building my fence, so it actually feels like I'm accomplishing something on my house at last, rather than just moving dirt around.
Only 2 weeks to go until the last ever Mordavia event - www.mordavia.com Really looking forward to it, and I've been busy conjuring up surprises for the players. Its being held at Stedfast Park in Piha, and it'll be the first weekend event that hasn't been held at Motu Moana. Odddly enough, St Catherines is being held at Motu Moana the same weekend as Mordavia, which is a shame as I'd like to go to both, but the final episode of a 5 year project wins out.
In other news Graham Nixon and I are busy contemplating the purchase of a semi-working ballista reconsructing it to become fully working. There's a great picture of it here: http://202.21.128.2/Antiques-collectables/Militaria/Other/auction-77769528.htm Current Mood: accomplished Current Music: Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night

10:41 pm - Random nothingness Been a while since I've bothered writing anything. Partly because I've been keeping myself busy with work and doing things on my house, partly becasue I decided it was a bit depressing to keep writing negative things about being depressed. :) Nothing terribly interesting happening lately anyway, oh, except my Hilux did get broken into last week and ransacked. They also tried to steal it as the ignition was all f**ked up, but no success for them. Current Mood: apathetic

03:39 am - I have a hole in my head.... well, in my mouth actually. Its hurts. About a week ago my upper jaw started aching and I thought it was just my wisdom teeth and planned on visiting the dentist the following week. Meanwhile the pain in the molar that the wisdom tooth was pushing into got worse and worse until on Sunday I accidentally bit down hard on the molar and almost passed out. My vision went dark and my head was swimming. So I end up going to an A&E Dentist on Sunday afternoon fully expecting to have to promise my first child to pay the bill. Turns out that the wisdom tooth was fine, but because of the pressure it had exerted on the 2nd molar it had caused a stress fracture some months ago and since then the molar had been decaying and created a nice big juicy abscess in my jaw. So i had a choice of either a root-canal at $1200 with only a 20-30% chance of success or have the tooth pulled. Needless to say it got pulled. After which I promptly passed out and came to 10mins later with my feet in the air and a concerned dental nurse giving me a funny look. Anyway, in addition to my gaping wound in my jaw, I still have to have the other wisdom teeth out - one of which has to be a surgical extraction and it also turns out I need 4 fillings because I drink so much fizzy drink and juice. There's another 7 possible fillings that I have a possibility to avoid by cutting out all fizzy drink and juice and using some new calcium paste smeared on my teeth at night. So in six months time we'll see if the paste and the acid free diet has halted and reversed the decay process. So at the moment I'm REALLY missing my coke, sarsaparilla and juices. Meanwhile the fillings I have to have, the molar extraction and the wisdom extractions are landing a bill at my feet of $2500 which was all very unexpected and came just when I was getting back on top of my bills. Grrrrr. Also because of the gaping wound in my mouth I couldn't smoke, so I've taken the opportunity to give up. Funny how the post-extraction pain helped quell the desire for a cigarette, but now that the pain is fading the craving for nicotine has hit with a vengeance. 7 days and no cigarettes.... can I last? We'll see..... Current Location: Purgatory Current Mood: uncomfortable Current Music: anything dark and brooding

04:05 am - Why? I've been feeling extremely unmotivated lately and overall pretty disillusioned with life. Just can't seem to shake it off. I have moments where I manage to break out of it and have some fun but its not often. For the last few months I've been throwing myself into working on my house to keep me from thinking about things too much and to occupy my time, but the crap weather outside has prevented me from doing that for the last few weeks. Instead I'm sitting at the window watching the rain, reading books I've read many times before, or just lying around in torpor. Thinking. Wondering why things can just suddenly change on you and pull the rug out from under your feet. Wondering why its so easy for everything you've ever wanted and was working toward to be shattered. Wondering why we bother. Is it all really worth it? This time last year was about the happiest I've ever been in my life. What a difference a year makes. 11:45 pm - Spooooookers I'm a fairly jaded, cynical person and I was truly skeptical that I'd actually be frightened at Spookers. But I was.
There were 12 of us that went. The drive to Spookers takes you through some lovely dark, desolate country roads and is perfect for settting the scene. Spookers is on the grounds of the old Kingseat Psychiatric Hospital and when we got there the place seemed deserted. We spent some time slowly driving down the vast sweeping driveways, past dimly lit run-down imposing brick buildings until we found someone waving us into a car park. There were more cars there than i expected. For some reason I had assumed that since I hadn't heard much about Spookers that it would be relatively quiet and little patronage. The Spookers Haunted House is set up in the old nurses quarters and it really looks the part. Faded, cracked paint, dirty walls and ceilings, exposed wires... all adds to the atmosphere. We paid $25 to do the Haunted House and The Forest of Terror combo. Now, I'm not going to go into specifics of what's actually awaiting you in the dark corners and sweeping corridors (or in the Forest) because that would just spoil the surprise - you have to go do it yourself. You go through the House in groups of no larger than 4, and through the Forest in groups no larger than 6. The props were great, and so was the costuming. The only criticisms that I have is that the props were too static and the spacings of the groups needs to be better controlled. Theres nothing worse than running into the group infront of you, or having the group behind catch up cause then the actors don't have time to set up properly and the surprise is lessened.
But on the whole, a thoroughly good time and I heartily recommend it to others. YOU HAVE TO GO.
Incidentally, they mentioned that they put though about 1000-1200 people on a Friday or Saturday night. I had no idea it was that popular. Current Location: Work Current Mood: listless
